Project success is often decided long before construction or execution begins.
During the project initiation phase, Project Controls play a critical role in transforming an idea into an executable plan. This is where scope is clarified, assumptions are documented, and the initial schedule and cost framework are established. When Project Controls are involved early, risks are identified sooner, expectations are aligned, and performance can be measured objectively from day one.
Unfortunately, too often, Project Controls are brought in after commitments have already been made! At that point, the role becomes reactive, explaining variances rather than preventing them. Early involvement allows Project Controls professionals to influence strategy, validate feasibility, and set realistic baselines that support informed decision-making.
Initiation is not about reporting. It’s about setting the rules of the game, how progress will be tracked, how change will be managed, and how success will be defined.
Get Project Controls involved early.
The downstream benefits are significant.
